Boy meets girl. They fall in love. Eventually, the thrill is gone and she splits. The boy, when he thinks about her, can’t bring himself to understand that she has moved on to a new life without him. Or, perhaps it is the boy that splits. The story is the same. One can’t believe that the other has a life of his or her own. It is a sad story either way.
I have fallen into that trap myself when I was young and didn’t have a clue. Even if she was the one who left I couldn’t imagine that the young lady’s heart wasn’t as broken as mine. Fortunately, I am several decades away from all of that now and realize that the girls that split up with me actually weren’t as crushed as I was. I wish I had known that back then.
With footage from Ukrainian photographer Dmytro Buianskiy and a song from the Brewer and Shipley “Shanghai” album, I have put together a song story that deals with this sad but somehow humorous state of affairs. One that often comes with the hubris of youth.
